I will present an overview of the Gaia mission and briefly discuss plans for future data releases and the mission extension. This is followed by highlights from the science harvested from Gaia DR2, focusing on the applications of interest to the physics community. Examples thereof are probing the physics of matter at extreme densities with white dwarfs and the insights into the Milky Way gained from Gaia DR2 and what they imply for dark matter studies.
